Robert R. Simons, 97, loving husband for 63 years of the late Doris (Goodwin) Simons, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
Robert was born in New Britain, CT., June 9, 1927, a son of the late George Simons and Margaret (Larson) Simons. Robert was a long-time resident of Berlin, CT. He attended New Britain and Berlin High School, before working for Modern Tool Co. Bob joined the United States Navy during WWII, where he was deployed in the South Pacific until his Honorable Discharge. Bob also worked for the Accurate Threaded Products Co. He then went on to open two service stations and garages, one on the Berlin Turnpike next to the Berlin Firehouse, the other on Worthington Ridge, next to the Post Office. After that, his career changed to being a car salesman and truck manager, first at Wilcox Rau Chevrolet Co. and then at LaBrun-Sichler Ford. Remaining in sales, Bob transferred from cars to the real estate business, where he joined Joseph F. Scheyd Agency until his retirement.
Shortly after returning from the Navy, Bob joined the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief and President. When he retired from active duty, Bob became an Honorable Life Member of the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his son James Simons and his wife Debbie; two daughters Ruth Simons and Nancy Dlugolenski and her husband Alex; he also leaves his only grandchild Mark Dlugolenski; and his brother Richard Simons and his wife Shirley; his sister Barbara Karoll; and a sister-in-law Polly Simons. Bob is also predeceased by his brother Leroy Simons; and his brother-in-law Peter Karoll.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours at Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main St., Kensington, Wednesday, October 30, 2024 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. A prayer service will begin at 11 a.m. at Berlin Memorial Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow in Maple Cemetery in Berlin. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bob may be made to the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, 1657 Berlin Turnpike, Berlin, CT. 06037.
