John S. Gontarz 85, of Lower Lane Berlin, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014. He was the husband of Florence (Banulski) Gontarz

Born in New Britain John was the son of the late Szczepan and Franciska Gontarz

John was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was owner and operator of Gontarz Floor Covering.  He was deeply involved with the Knights of Columbus as a member of both 3rd  and  4th degree he served the Knights in many capacities including Grand Knight , Financial Secretary, Faithful Navigator, District Deputy and Color Guard.

In addition to his wife Florence, John is survived by his five daughters, Ann Gontarz of Southington; Marie and her husband David Stark of South Windsor; Nancy and her husband Dr. Louis Rague of Hilliard, OH; Patti and her husband Chris Hilal of Hopewell Junction, NY; and Paula and her husband Robert Fox of Peterborough, NH.,  Grandchildren Kari, Bryan, Eric, Casey, Lisa, Andrea, Haley, Adam, Kaleigh and Justin;  Great grandchildren, Karissa, Michael and Nathan; one sister Helena Gontarz of Merced, CA. and  many nieces and nephews.

John was pre-deceased by two Brothers Stanley and Kasmir Gontarz and three Sisters Eve Fraser, Charlotte Closson and Lucy Zions.

Friends and family are invited to call on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Kensington from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday 9:00 a.m. April 10, 2014 at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Paul Church 10:00 a.m.   Burial with military honors will follow in Maple Cemetery on Worthington Ridge Berlin.
